MISHAWAKA – Paul Marandet and Kyle Mangas led their Warsaw boys basketball team to a slew of success the past two seasons as a dynamic duo.
The pair of backcourt stars found themselves facing off on opposite sides Tuesday night.
Marandet and Mangas both turned in outstanding efforts for their respective teams in the McDonald’s Michiana All-Star game in the Wiekamp Center on the Bethel College campus.
The Gray team, which included Marandet, rolled to a 149-116 victory over the Red team.
South Bend Riley sophomore Damezi Anderson, whose team lost to Warsaw in a regional semifinal game, was the show stopper. The sensational Anderson poured in 50 points on 22-31 shooting from the field, including 6-11 from distance.
Senior Marandet, who is still weighing his college options, tallied 14 points on 7-11 shooting for the winners. He also had seven rebounds and five assists in the win.
“It’s a blessing to have this opportunity and humbling to be out here surrounded by all these great players,” said Marandet. “It was a lot different playing against Kyle.”
Marandet, one of three senior starters, and Mangas led the Tigers to a 25-2 mark this past season. The pair of star guards helped Warsaw win the Northern Lakes Conference championship and then Class 4-A sectional and regional titles before a loss to McCutcheon in the semistate.
“It means a lot to me what we did this season,” said Marandet, who was second in scoring and ranked first in assists for Warsaw. “It means a lot to me what it meant to the community and how they supported us. We created history (starting the season 20-0) and we left something there to be proud of.”
The Gray team dominated the contest after the initial five minutes. The Gray team led 72-47 at halftime as Anderson had 27 points.

Mangas, who was recently named to the North Group for the Junior All-Star team, had 20 points. The 6-3 guard hit 8-11 shots, including 4-7 from distance, and had five assists.
“It’s an honor to get out here and be able to celebrate all the good players that we have in this area,” Mangas said. “It’s a lot of fun. I just was trying to get everyone involved. It was weird, but also fun, to play against Paul.”
Mangas, who was the Ink Free News Player of the Year and averaged a team-high 19.4 points-per-game for the Tigers, is focused on improving in the offseason.
“I want to improve all aspects of my game,” Mangas noted. “The big thing for me next year is to be a leader. We don’t want to go backwards after what we did this season.”
NorthWood senior standout Braxton Linville, who will play at Grace College next season, had 10 points for the Red team.
ShanQuan Hemphill of Michigan City scored 23 points for the winners. Nick Felke of Plymouth netted 17 points and Vinny Miranda of NorthWood five for the Red team.
Bryant Givens of South Bend Washington had 21 points for the Red team, while Dakiyron Fox of NorthWood scored 19 on 8-10 shooting to go with a team-high nine rebounds. Matt Trewhella of Penn netted 17 points and Jair Rodgers of Mishawaka Marian chipped in with 17.
Goshen standout guard Brady Bechtel, who will play at Bethel College next season, was selected to the game, but did not play due to an injury.
The Gray team shot 63-106 from the field, including 22-48 from distance. The Red squad finished 48-95 from the field, including a 16-51 effort from long range.
The two teams shot a grand total of 13 free throws in the contest.
