An easy going man who enjoyed life and all it had to offer with those he loved by his side, Russell Pratt was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and friend. He had an endearing sense of humor and loved making those around him laugh, and his caring ways were unending. Never out to impress, Russell was more of a traditional type of guy who enjoyed the simple things in life. For these things and so much more, he will be deeply missed.

The year 1963 was a turning point in the history of America as the culture of the U.S. was moving along at a rapid pace. Fashions became more daring, and the introduction of “Beatlemania” forever changed the music scene. An age of innocence was lost with the assassination of President Kennedy while mounting trouble in Vietnam and the continued campaign for civil rights was news of the day. In the lives of Russell Wayne and Hedwig (Dietrich) Pratt Sr., however, there was hope for better tomorrows throughout these changing times when they welcomed the birth of their son, Russell Wayne Pratt Jr. on June 7, 1963.

Born in Columbia City, Russell was a lifelong resident of Whitley County. His father was a milk hauler, and his mother looked after their household and worked at BRC. One of three rambunctious boys, Russell grew up alongside his two older brothers, Lynn and Ron. During his youth Russell enjoyed swimming, building things, and helping his father work on trucks out in their barn. Many exciting adventures were enjoyed by Russell playing with neighborhood friends and his brothers. Always a practical joker, he liked making others laugh even from his earliest years.

Family was always important to Russell. During his childhood he spent time with his cousins, and as a family they visited extended family in Michigan as often as they could. In his teens he liked snowmobiling, football, fishing and hunting. He especially enjoyed sitting around weekend bonfires with friends and hanging out at the Ramble-In where good times were had by all. Russell attended the area schools before graduating from Churubusco High School with the Class of 1982. For several years he served in the Army Reserves.

Christine Ann Hyser was Russell’s one true love. They met in Columbia City, and after dating for a year and falling deeply in love, the two were happily married on April 20, 1985, at Churubusco United Methodist Church. Russell took Amber into his heart, Christine’s one year old daughter, and loved her as his own. A year later they welcomed their son, Tadd, who made their family complete. A good and loving father, Russell’s family was the delight of his life. He’d do anything for those he loved, and he worked hard to make a good home for Christine and the kids.

Russell worked all his life as a truck driver and owned his own business with his brother, Ron. He most recently drove a dump truck for Wayne Asphalt. Known as, “Mr. Fix It” by many, Russell knew his way around an engine and working with tools. Never far from Russell’s side were the German Shepherds he so loved as well as a few Beagles he came to love over the years.

When it came to family travel, Russell took his family to see his parents in Florida several times. They visited the caves in southern Indiana, and vacationed in Kentucky. One of his most memorable trips included a trip he took to Canada to go fishing. However, Russell counted the greatest days of his life as the day Christine became his bride, the birth of his children, and his 25th wedding anniversary he and Christine celebrated.

For fun, Russell loved riding four-wheelers with the guys, camping, fishing, watching TV and being with family and friends. A few of his favorite TV shows included MASH, The Andy Griffith Show, and Happy Days. He loved country music, along with music from the 1950s.

In all ways, Russell Pratt just enjoyed the simple, more traditional pleasures in life. It didn’t take much to make him happy, and his funny demeanor was always a welcome addition wherever he went. Strong of heart, he was a loving and caring man who will be missed deeply and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.

Russell Wayne Pratt Jr., 52, of Columbia City, passed away at 11:37 a.m. Sunday March 13, at his residence.

Survivors include his loving wife of 30 years: Christine Pratt, Columbia City; children: Amber (David) Pressler; Tadd (Jessica) Pratt, both of Columbia City; grandchildren: David; Rilee; Tyler; Madison; Mason; and Noah; his morther: Heddy Pratt, Columbia City. He was preceded in death by his father: Russell Wayne Pratt Sr.; and brothers: Lynn and Ronald Pratt.

Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday March 16, at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, Columbia City. Funeral services for Russell will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday March 17, at the funeral home, with calling one hour prior. Burial will follow in Broxon Cemetery, Columbia City. Memorial contributions in memory of Russell may be made to Visiting Nurses and Hospice Home.
