MUNCIE – On the sport’s biggest Indiana stage, an Elkhart Central freshman had a big day. Abi Downs finished 13th overall in all-around to top area gymnasts performing at the IHSAA Gymnastics State Finals Saturday at Ball State University.
Downs scored a 36.80 in all-around, leading Central in three of the four disciplines. Downs scored 9.45 on vault (14th overall), 9.175 on bars (18th) and 9.15 on beam (19th) along with a 9.025 on floor, tying teammate Rylee Damewood. Skiler Reveal had Elkhart’s top floor routine score with a 9.075, which was 26th overall.
Elkhart, which won the Wawasee Sectional and was second at the Huntington North Regional, placed eighth out of nine teams with a 107.3 team score. Columbus North, which was boosted by a pair of individual championships from Claire Thompson, won the team title with 114.85 points, knocking off perennial contender Valparaiso and its 113.25 points.
Thompson scored 38.4 in all-around, winning that category helped by titles on bars (9.7) and beam (9.675).
Morgan Township’s Kylee Maxwell won the vault title with a 9.85 and Anna Watkin of Owen Valley was the floor champion with a 9.775.
