Symphony Of The Lakes Presents Chamber Concert
WARSAW — The Symphony of the Lakes, the orchestral branch of Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts, will present its 2016 chamber concert, “Celebrate the Americas,” at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts. The concert is sponsored in part by Creighton Brothers, LLC.
The chamber concert will feature nine musicians — one string quartet and a wind quintet — highlighting musical traditions born in the Americas. The repertoire will include “Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96 ‘American’” by Antonin Dvorak and “Aires Tropicales” by Paquito D’Rivera, among six other selections.
The woodwind quintet will feature Bill Brown on french horn, Sue Devito on clarinet, Dawn Engler on flute and piccolo, Alex McCrory on bassoon, and Stephanie Patterson on oboe and English horn. The string quartet will be made up of Benita Barber on violin, Lyn Buschert on viola, Tom Stirling on violin, and Sara Thomas on cello.
Members of the woodwind quintet have highlighted “Aires Tropicales” as a difficult but rewarding piece. “ ‘Aires’ has been the most challenging, but I love the Latin rhythms and flavors,” Devito said. “It is one of those compositions where you can discover something new at each visit.” According to Devito, the piece is woven together with intricate nuances not often found in most Western quintet literature.
Those who come early to the event will be treated to a special 2:10 p.m. musician’s chat, during which members of the ensemble will discuss points of interest for each piece, providing a deeper understanding of the music’s roots, history, and other unique aspects.
The event will take place at Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts, offering a unique opportunity to witness the symphony of the Lakes in an intimate round-stage format. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students.
They are available at the box office, over phone at (574) 267-8041, or online.
