Charles E. “Chuck” Jones, 84, Plymouth, passed away on March 7, 2016, peacefully in his sleep.
Chuck was born in Donaldson, on March 20, 1931, the son of Clara Mae (Hovis) Jones and Theron E. Jones. He graduated from West Township School in the Class of 1949. He joined the US Navy on Nov. 8, 1950, and was proud to serve his country during the Korean War. He was very thrilled to experience two separate hurricanes, one of those at the Arctic Circle. He told of unscrewing desks and mess tables from the decks and lashing them to the bulkheads in corners. During those times he said they would sit on the deck with their legs drawn up and knees crossed so they could hold the mess trays without spilling their food. Locations he experienced were: Panama; Naples, Italy; Mediterranean Ocean; Port Said; Suez Canal; Egypt; Philippine Islands; Japan; The Equator; and The International Date Line.
Chuck was married to Joyce E. Holderead on June 13, 1954. They were married 61 years.
Chuck worked his way up to manager at Wickes Buildings in Argos, where he was employed for over 20 years. He enjoyed playing his guitar, fishing, pool, golfing and being a prankster…not necessarily in that order.
Chuck is survived by his wife: Joyce; one son: Rhett Jones, Plymouth; three daughters: Rhea Webster; Melanie Jones, both of Plymouth; and Alicia Jones, Fairfield, Ohio; one grandson: Ryan Sinkler; one brother: Ralph Jones, Plymouth. At the age of eight, Chuck became an uncle; first to nephew: Mike Goze, and then to niece: Marcia Goze, with whom he spent a great deal of his childhood. He is also survived by several other nieces, a nephew, and several close friends. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Thelma Baxter; Lucille Woolley; and one brother: Robert Jones.
A Funeral service in honor of Charles will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 11, in the Van Gilder Funeral Home, Plymouth, with Pastor Les Johnson officiating. Burial with military honors will follow the service in the New Oak Hill Cemetery. A time of visiting with the Jones family will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, in the Van Gilder Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to The Wounded Warrior Project. The family of Chuck Jones wishes to thank Harbor Light Hospice.
