Grace Softball Squad Takes Twinbill
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Grace College softball team picked up its third straight win thanks to a sweep of Point Park on Thursday.
The Lady Lancers used a gem from freshman pitcher Hannah England to win 4-1 in the opener. Grace’s offense took over in the second game, winning 10-1 in a run-rule shortened game.
In the opener, Sam Heim singled and stole second in the top of the first inning. Two batters later, Brittany Turner laced a double to drive in Heim.
The game remained 1-0 in Grace’s favor until the fifth inning. Hannah Herbster and Heim doubled on consecutive at-bats to start the inning, and Clarissa Knight drove in Heim with a single to make the score 3-0.
Kati Gregory plated in the sixth inning, giving the Pioneers a 4-0 hole entering their final at-bats. Point Park benefitted from a pair of fielding errors to score a run and load the bases. But Allison Franklin came in to get the final out of the game and earn the save.
Hannah England tossed a sparkling game from the mound, going 6.2 innings and giving up five hits and one run. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Herbster batted 2-for-4 from the leadoff position, and Heim was 2-for-3 with two runs.
In the second game, Grace produced 10 runs on 13 hits. The Lady Lancers (5-7) ended the game in five innings thanks to a run-rule 10-1 victory.
The second inning started Grace’s offensive burst. The first three batters reached base safely, and Brittany Melzoni drove in two with a double. Morgan Hutcheson doubled in Melzoni later in the inning. A sacrifice fly and a two-out RBI single by Heim capped off a five-run inning.
In the fourth inning, Grace loaded the bases with the first three batters. Chandler Elliott then cleared the bases with a double. Paige Hlutke drove in Elliott with a ground ball to make the score 9-1. Herbster scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Grace’s No. 1-5 hitters all had two hits, including a 2-for-2 day by Turner. Herbster had 2 hits, 2 runs and 1 stolen base, and Elliott was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.
Elliott tossed her second complete game in three days, allowing five hits in five innings.
The Lady Lancers end their Spring Break trip on Friday. Grace takes on Lourdes at 9 a.m. and No. 10 St. Xavier at 11 a.m.
