WARSAW — Today marks the annual Fire and Ice celebration in honor of February’s First Friday. The event will feature carvings, fire spinners and more.Carvings began at noon today, Feb. 5, in the downtown area. Ten different carvers from Michiana Ice Carvers are currently at work to create unique works of art, commissioned by area businesses, throughout the streets of downtown Warsaw.

According to Kevin Lutton, an ice carver from Michigan City, this is his second year carving ice in Warsaw for Fire and Ice. Lutton will carve three separate sculptures today, one of which he notes came as a huge compliment to him. Though some sculptors receive commissions based on others work, Lutton instead received a request to recreate a work he created last year for Kosciusko County Velo Cycling Club — which included the club’s logo and a carved bike atop it.

Lutton noted though the weather is warm, so long as the sun stays behind clouds, he believes the sculptures will weather the warmth well.

Fire and Ice will kick off tonight at 5 p.m. with Pyroscope fire spinners lighting up center stage at 7 p.m., 7:39 p.m. and again at 8 p.m.

This year’s centerpiece will be an ice replica of the torch found on the Indiana state flag, which has become the symbol of the Indiana bicentennial birthday celebration. The centerpiece will be lit at 7 p.m. depending on when it is completed.

An 8-foot, lit, metal torch will be available to purchase to symbolize state price in honor of the bicentennial. The torch will be available for $500.
