IHSAA SportsGOSHEN – The semifinals are set for the Class 4-A Goshen Sectional.

No. 4 Penn and Northridge each posted first-round wins Wednesday night to advance to face each other in semifinal play on Friday night.

The semifinals tip-off Friday at 6 p.m. with Warsaw (10-13), who defeated Elkhart Central 50-42 in the opener of the seven-team sectional on Tuesday night, facing Concord (5-17). Penn (22-2) will then meet Northridge (21-4) in the second semifinal game. The championship game is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the LaPorte Regional on Feb. 13.

Warsaw, which won the sectional title at Goshen last year, defeated Concord by an 82-38 final in a Northern Lakes Conference game on Jan. 23 at Warsaw. Penn, which has won five straight sectional titles and was added to the field at Goshen this year, pummeled Northridge 77-26 back on Dec. 15.

Penn used a dominating stretch in the second and third quarters to turn back Elkhart Memorial 58-24 Wednesday night. The Kingsmen used a 22-0 run in the stretch in outscoring Memorial 31-9 in the second and third periods of play.

Penn, which has seven seniors, out rebounded Memorial by a 42-20 count in the win. Carmen Buhr, a 6-1 senior, led the way for coach Kristin Kaniewski’s team with 15 points and 11 rebounds

Sophomore Kambria Dale led Memorial with nine points. The Crimson Chargers, who had no seniors on their sectional roster, finish at 10-13. Coach Steve Scott’s team lost three players this season to knee injuries.

Penn is also missing a key player as Kaitlyn Marenyi is out due to a foot injury. The senior point guard is a four-year letter winner for the Kingsmen.

Northridge outlasted Goshen 25-18 in the other semifinal on Wednesday night. The two teams combined to shoot 16-68 from the field, including 0-22 on 3-point attempts.

Goshen led 6-4 after the opening period before the Raiders took a 12-8 halftime lead. Northridge led 14-11 after the third period.

Junior Marci Miller led the Raiders with seven points. Junior Kelsey Brickner scored six points.

Senior Olivia Love led Goshen with six points. Senior Kyrie Potter and junior Aylissa Trosper each scored five.

Northridge shot 8-33 from the field and 9-15 from the free throw line. Goshen was 8-35 from the field and 2-7 from the line.
