BOURBON – After the start the Triton Trojans girls basketball team had, not many thought Triton had a championship in them. After proving the doubters wrong by claiming a Hoosier North Athletic Conference title, Triton is out to prove the doubters wrong again.
The odds are stacked against Triton to win a second piece of hardware at a loaded Class 1-A Culver Sectional. Triton comes in with its conference title in tow, but will be looking at the prospects of having to possibly knock off two teams that had their ways with Triton earlier this season. Both Argos (18-3) and South Central Union Mills (18-5) are split in the bracket, and Triton would likely have to go through both to get a sectional title. But first things first, North Miami wants to end the conversation before it starts.
The Warriors (10-12) started the year hot, but have since cooled off, losing seven of its final 10 games. Not a big squad, with center Emmy Grant only standing 5’10”, Triton has the size to contend inside. If the Trojans can get its outside game going, it could shoot its way to a win.
Hannah Wanemacher has been the lynchpin for Triton, scoring in bunches this season. Wanemacher likes to hoist the three-point shots, and has made 40 of them this season, helping her to a 14 points per game clip. From the guard position, the sophomore has also grabbed 3.4 rebounds per game and is shooting 77 percent from the free throw line.
Jaela Meister gives Triton a solid second scoring option, or can be the first option if asked. A slow start to the season due to a knee injury, Meister has slowly gotten healthier and has offered eight points and four rebounds per game. The senior has shown the ability to be the best player on the floor, and is a matchup up problem for smaller lineups.
Charlotte Morris and Nicole Sechrist give Triton a pair of tall defenders inside, and Morris has found a scoring touch shooting 55 percent from the floor this year. Brooklyn Beatty, Shayla May and Quinn Downing have also played major roles for the squad, and super sub Sara Stevens has added sneaky points and steals down the stretch.
“You definitely can not take anything for granted,” stated Triton head coach Adam Heckaman. “At this point in the year you want to be playing your best and I feel we are definitely playing our best on the defensive end and our offense is continuing to improve. So regardless of match ups we want to focus on what we can control and go from there.”
Triton started its season 1-7 but went on to run undefeated in the HNAC, claiming the title to settle at 10-12 overall.
“What a team has done before sectional starts doesn’t matter,” said Heckaman. “Once you get into the postseason it only matters what you do that game. With our offense sometimes being inconsistent we will focus on controlling the defensive end in case we struggle offensively. If we can take care of our defense we will give ourselves a chance to advance.”
The Trojans and Warriors will meet at at 8 p.m. Tuesday, following the Argos (18-3) versus Culver (2-20) which is slated to start at 6:30 p.m. Friday will see LaCrosse (13-9) versus Argos or Culver at 6:30 p.m. and South Central (18-5) vs. North Miami or Triton. The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
