Whitko Sports Wrap – Jan. 30
Walpole Goes Off
Nate Walpole had another huge scoring night, this time dropping 40 points as Whitko outscored Maconaquah 81-75 Saturday night.
Walpole, who also had six rebounds and five assists, rang up 44 points a week ago against Northfield.
River West also had a big game for the Wildcats, finishing with 18 points, five boards and four assists. Devon Adkins totaled 14 points and three assists in the win.
Whitko took a 20-18 lead in the first quarter and doubled it at the half, only to spread out a 17-point lead in the third quarter with three minutes remaining, ringing up a 19-6 run.
Maconaquah would get the lead back down to five in the fourth at 72-67 with two minutes to go, but would get no closer.
Whitko evens its mark at 8-8 and 4-3 in the Three Rivers Conference while Maconaquah falls to 8-8 overall and drops its first TRC game, sitting at 5-1 in the conference. The Wildcats will host North Miami Thursday night.
Lady ‘Cats Close In Style
A 19-2 run in the first quarter was all she wrote in the girls hoops matchup between Whitko and Maconaquah Saturday. Whitko would continue to drive the point home in a 68-30 final over the visiting Braves.
In picking up its 17th win of the season, the ‘Cats tie the 2007-08 Whitko girls team for the most wins in program history. Whitko finishes its season 17-6 overall and 7-2 in the TRC.
Three players reached double figures for Whitko, led by Aly Reiff’s 21 points, while Brianna Cumberland and Hannah Yohe each turned up its scoring game with 15 points each.
Ellie Snep ended with six points and Jen Reiff had five points in the regular season finale for Whitko, which will take on Bremen Tuesday in the first round of the Class 2-A Central Noble Sectional.
Kate White had 11 points and Brianna Humbert 10 points for Maconaquah, which wraps up 5-17 overall and 1-8 in the TRC. The Braves play Western in the Class 3-A West Lafayette Sectional.
Alma Lone Wildcat To Advance
Whitko’s wrestling sectional experience at Whitko was a sour one as only one grappler was able to qualify for the regional. Dillon Alma at 170 pounds would finish fourth, where the top four wrestlers in each weight class automatically advance to the regional.
Alma (26-13) took a forfeit in round one, then after a loss to Zach Davis of Concordia by 5-2 decision, rallied with two falls over Liam Holly of Dwenger and Cameron Smith of Garrett. In the third-place match, Alma again lost to Davis by 9-3 decision.
Whitko had two wrestlers finish fifth in Logan Busz at 106 and RJ Patrick at 170. Busz (27-12) and Patrick (14-14) will serve as alternates at the Fort Wayne Carroll Regional should anyone scratch ahead of the regional next Saturday.
