Tigers Take Duals At CMA
CULVER – In a showdown of potential sectional rivals, Warsaw took matters into its own hands. The Lady Tigers picked up key points late to defeat Culver Academy 95-91 while the Tigers won 10 of 12 events to cruise past the Academy 125-58 Tuesday night.
Warsaw’s girls made hay late in what was a tight meet from start to finish. Delaney Wihebrink and Bridgette Yoder went one-two in the breaststroke and the 400 free relay claimed four points with its second-place time to get the win. Wihebrink’s 1:10.83 winner in the breast paired with Yoder’s 1:16.11, two seconds faster than Culver’s top effort.
Warsaw also had a huge turnout in the 50 free, where they swept the top three spots led by Olivia Herman at 26.84.
Warsaw won the medley relay (2:01.65) and the 200 free relay (1:48.87), Lauren Kuhl claimed the 500 free (5:59.37) and Brenna Morgan won both the 100 (55.54) and 200 (2:04.19) freestyles.
“Pretty close meet, but I was really pleased with how they swam,” said Warsaw head coach Tony DeBrota. “They fought more towards the end since previous dual meets. We tried some changes for sectionals.”
The boys meet didn’t have nearly the drama.
Ethan Cook and Matt Wildman led the charge for Warsaw, both taking two individual wins. Cook was a winner in the 100 (51.68 and the 200 (1:55.51) while Wildman owned the breaststroke (1:06.33) and the 50 (23.81).
Hudson Snyder picked up a win in the 500 (5:18.57), Nick Zogbi held on for a win in the backstroke (59.65) and Tyler Paseka claimed gold in diving with 202.90 points.
All three of Warsaw’s relays had a ‘one’ next to them, the medley at 1:46.35, the 200 at 1:34.77 and the 400 at 3:35.17.
“I was hoping for better times, but they still swam well,” DeBrota said. “We changed things around a little to prepare for NLCs next week. But overall our finishes looked faster and I saw a decent degree of determination to win.”
Warsaw will welcome in Columbia City this Saturday in the final home dual of the season for both programs. Warsaw will then take to the Northern Lakes Conference Boys Swim Championships next Thursday and Saturday at Northridge.
