HOLLYWOOD — Glenn Frey, guitarist and founding member of the “Eagles” has died.

Frey, 67, took a turn for the worse in recent days after dealing with intestinal injuries for several months, according to TMZ, who first broke the news. The singer’s website reports he had a bout with diverticulitis in November.

The band announced Frey’s passing on Facebook Jan. 18. His band mates say Frey died from complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia.

“Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community and millions of fans worldwide,” the band wrote, adding lyrics to their song “It’s Your World Now.”

Frey founded the Eagles in 1971 alongside Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. After the band broke up, Frey embarked on a solo career in the 1990s, including hits like “The Heat Is On” and “Smuggler’s Blues.” He was also the talent behind the theme songs to “Miami Vice” and “Beverly Hills Cop.”

Henley says Frey “started it all” and was “the spark plug, the man with the plan.” He says Frey had “an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn’t quit.”
