MILFORD — Upcoming programs and events at Milford Public Library:

Knitting Club

Knitting Club meets from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, in the teen area of the library. Bring a knitting project and get help from experienced knitters. Learn how to knit or continue working on a current project.

Adult Reading Club

Adults ages 18 and up can register to participate in our annual Adult Reading Program. Stop by the adult circulation desk for program information. For each book you read, or book-on-compact disk you listen to, you can put your name in for a chance to win some fabulous prizes. Each Friday, the Library will draw a name out of the bowl, and that person will win a prize. Prizes are donated by local sponsors and will be displayed prior to being given away. The Adult Reading Program ends on March 31. We are going to read all winter anyway, why not read to win? Reading keeps the mind in great shape, so sign up to participate today.

Books to Movies That Will Vie for the 2016 Oscars

Six book to movie adaptations are featured in last year’s Oscar nominees in the Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Actor categories. These titles, “American Sniper”, “The Imitation Game”, “The Theory of Everything”, “Still Allice”, “Unbroken” and “Gone Girl”, prove that many of the best movies made originate from amazing books. We suggest that you read last year’s Oscar page to screen books, because they are all terrific stories. Here are some other books becoming movies in 2016. Will any of them win an Oscar? You be the judge. “The 5th Wave” by Rick Yancey, “The Girl on the Train” by Paula Hawkins, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith, “The Legend of Tarzan” based on the character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” by J. K. Rowling, “The BFG” by Roald Dahl, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” by Ransom Riggs and “The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling. Read the book before the movie hits screens!

Winter Preschool Storytime

Winter story time is coming soon. Join staff beginning Wednesday, Feb. 3, for Winter Story Time. Preschool story time is for ages 3-6 and will be at 10:15 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 7 p.m. Thursdays. Themes this winter include Keeping Warm Outside, Keeping Warm Inside, Eskimos, Penguins and Polar Bears, Winter Sports, and Books by children’s author, Mo Willems. We will read stories, make a craft and enjoy a snack! Bringing your children to Story Time is a wonderful way to introduce them to the library, practice and establish good listening skills and meet other children their age. Register your children at the circulation desk in the children’s department, or call (574) 658-4312. We hope you sign up to join us.

Friends of the Library News

Do you have lots of books or magazines laying around the house, gathering dust? Why not donate them to the library for others to buy and read! The Friends of the Library welcomes all your donations of books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, and sheet music. Feel free to go through our collection and purchase a few things as well. Each book/cd costs 50 cents. The Friends are also selling cloth book bags for $12. Come in and purchase a bag at the circulation desk upstairs and support your local library. Join them for their next meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, in the meeting room! Anyone is welcome! Ask for a Friends brochure at the circulation desks. Annual membership fees are very reasonable. Come be a part of a group that helps the library.
