DUNLAP – There wasn’t much mincing of words from Warsaw swim head coach Tony DeBrota following his team’s lopsided double losses to Concord Saturday morning.

“Concord came in and looked like they were ready to swim, and we didn’t look like we were ready to swim,” DeBrota said following the 122-64 girls loss and 116-69 boys loss to the Minutemen. “I said in the short meeting afterwards that I didn’t know what else to really tell them. We looked like we forgot simple fundamentals. Plain and simple. I asked if we were tired. They said they were pretty tired. That’s really not an excuse at this point of the season. They didn’t even look like they were trying.”

Of the 24 events performed Saturday, the usually potent Warsaw sides managed just five combined wins. One of those wins was a tie and three of the other four involved Brenna Morgan.

The tie came between Warsaw’s Nick Zogbi and Concord’s Rees Paul in the backstroke. Zogbi and Paul were swapping tiny leads, but Zogbi entered the final 25 yards a short distance ahead. Paul’s very late push sent a mighty wake into the wall, with the scoreboard posting a double “1” next to the two names at 59.03.

Morgan, who is looking to shore up her 100 and 200 freestyles in anticipation for the Northern Lakes Conference meet back at Concord next Thursday and Saturday, was pushed hard in both events. Morgan, the defending NLC champion in the 100, swam a 53.87 as she pulled away from Maddisen Lantz. In the 200, Morgan had the same company with Alex Beer right on her tail before claiming a 2:01.62 winner. Morgan anchored the 200 free relay win for the Tigers, joining Laurel Moeller, Olivia Herman and Lauren Kuhl for a 1:44.85 win, but Morgan had to make up almost two lengths on Olivia Trout for the win.

The 23.54 split for Morgan in the final 50 of the relay was an eye opener for DeBrota, who stated both he and Morgan are unsure if Morgan would take the 200 or the 50, to which Morgan has won the 50 and 100 both years at the NLC, heading into conference.

“Brenna’s 50 split in the relay was impressive, but we’ll have to see how she feels this week,” DeBrota said. “I’m sure she would be the first to tell you she didn’t have her best meet today, either.”

Warsaw’s other win came in the boys 100 free, which Ethan Cook and Matt Wildman went one-two for the Tigers. Cook swam a 49.49 and Wildman a 50.44, taking out Concord guns Shawn Stauffer and Nathan Rose.

Rose and Stephen Krecsmar would have big days for the Concord boys. Krecsmar won both the fly (54.11) and 200 free (1:46.53) and Rose took the 50 (22.49) while combining to help Concord’s 200 (1:31.22) and 400 (3:22.65) relays to wins.

Jillian Dawson had a pair of wins for the Concord girls in the IM (2:21.55) and fly at 1:03.69.

One of the more telling races to define DeBrota’s mood was the boys 500 free. Watching Hudson Snyder jump out to a sizable lead halfway through the freestyle, Concord’s Ryan Jackowiak lurked just into Snyder’s wake. With one lap to go, all of a sudden Jackowiak was making the turn with Snyder and won the burst to the finish to win at 5:06.04 to Snyder’s 5:06.22. DeBrota was pleased with the time, but used the moment for teaching points. But his point was being made.

“Hopefully we can change the mindset from today,” DeBrota said. “I told the kids that we’re better than this. We’ll take what we need from today, but we’re going to have to just move on. Concord is phenomenal as a team and has a huge base in their freestyle, and we knew that. They exploited a lot of our weaknesses. We just have to forget about it and move on.”

Warsaw finishes 5-2 in boys NLC duals, the girls 4-3.

The girls swim NLC begins Thursday with prelims at 5:30 p.m. and finals Saturday at 1 p.m., both at Concord. The boys will be back in action Jan. 19 at Culver Academy.
