SYRACUSE — Northridge came to town Tuesday night in Northern Lakes Conference swim action. The visiting Raiders showed why they are tops in the NLC yet again this year with a 127-59 victory over Wawasee.
After starting the meet with a sweep in diving, Northridge was dominant throughout winning 10 of the evening’s 12 events.
Wawasee was unable to match the depth or experience that the Raiders brought to the pool but one Lady Warrior swimmer still managed to provide some excitement for the Lady Warriors.
Paige Miller squared off with Katie Hughes of Northridge in the 500 free. A rivalry that started between the athletes two years ago has officially stopped budding and is now in full bloom. The two juniors put on a show in the distance event, making for the most exciting contest in the girls meet.
Hughes held a small lead over Miller for most of the race up until the final lap and a half. Miller paced herself perfectly and was able to pass Hughes o the home stretch to clock a final time of 5:04.40. Hughes finished just behind Miller at 5:05.28. The time was a season best for a jubilant Miller.
“We’ve been working on specific things with Paige in practice,” began Wawasee head coach Julie Robinson. “so when she came into this meet those were the things she’d been thinking about and she executed each one of those very well. That was really great to see.”
Outside of Miller’s performance there was no first place finishes to write home about for the Lady Warriors, but that did not stop Wawasee from great performances.
Shelby Adams took third in the 100 breast (1:15.25) and recorded a season best time in the 200 free (2:05.02). Alison Troutman clocked a lifetime best in the 200 free while Tessa Freel, Morgan Ebright and Zoe White all swam lifetime bests in the 500 free. Jasmine Morehead and Macie Stuckman recorded lifetime bests in the 100 back. Caitling Kingrey had lifetime bests in both the 200 free and 100 breast.
“Caitlin had the most amazing races today,” said Robinson. “She dropped an enormous amount of time today. I was very impressed with her. And then I’d have to say my favorite event was the 500 free. Paige, of course, had a great race but then we had three other girls swim lifetime bests. They dropped 11, 12 and 13 seconds off their times.”
Kayla Hershberger’s 1:05.20 in the 100 back was a season best for the senior, placing her third. Hershberger also placed second in the 100 free (56.96).
Wawasee’s other two seniors also fared well in Tuesday’s meet. Mikala Mawhorter placed third in the 50 free (26.54) and fourth in the 100 fly (1:11.61). Hannah Rhoades placed fourth in the diving portion of the meet with a final score of 170.10.
Wawasee closed out its performance Tuesday night with an impressive time in the 400 free relay. The team of Hershberger, Madi McBride, Adams and Miller finished with a time of 3:56.59, slightly ahead of Northridge’s 3:57.22.
“We’re going to start working on fine tuning all the little details of our races as we approach the end of the season,” Robinson stated. “I think the girls are where they need to be, I think they’re going to taper great and we’re really looking forward to conference and sectionals.”
Wawasee (5-2, 4-2) will swim with Goshen at home this Saturday and swim at the NLC prelims next Tuesday.
