WARSAW — James D. Cable, 54, 1623 N. Fox Farm Road, Warsaw, was transported to the Kosciusko County Jail from Miami Correctional Facility Monday, Dec. 28, on charges of theft and auto theft. A third charge, a habitual offender enhancement, has also been filed. The charges stem from events in April 2015.

Cable was released from the state department of corrections on Monday after serving three years for failure to register as a sex offender.

The theft charge, according to court documents, stem from Cable attempting to sell an individual three stolen chainsaws and two impact wrenches on April 13. Cable was selling the items for $300 and made a statement to the potential buyer “You know what I do, but they’re not from around here.” Several days later Thomas Perzee contacted police after hearing Cable had attempted to sell items he believed had been stolen from his property. Perzee identified the stolen items as his. He told police it had been arranged Cable would care for farm animals while Perzee was gone for several days. The tools were valued at $800.

The auto theft charge stem from an April 16 case, where Cable took control of a 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck owned by one individual and loaned to another. The truck was located in DuGuoin, Ill. Kosciusko County Detective J.D. Ayres spoke with Perry County Illinois Sheriff’s Officer Scott Kellerman who stated he had received a call from a Michael Eaton who reported Cable drove the truck to his residence and parked the truck behind that residence. Cable had asked Eaton to use his license plate on the truck. Eaton notified police after being concerned where the vehicle came from. Illinois authorities discovered it was registered to an individual in North Webster. Cable was taken into custody at that time.

When the auto theft charge was filed on May 12, authorities also filed a habitual offender enhancement charge. The charge was based on facts Cable had been convicted and sentenced on prior, unrelated felony offenses: auto theft on March 27, 2008; and two charges of failure to register as a sex offender on March 25, 2010 and May 15, 2014.
