David L. Bonar, 83, a resident of Churubusco and well-known Churubusco businessman, passed away at 4:20 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015, at the family residence following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Bonar was born in Churubusco on Aug. 2, 1932, a son of Trevor H. and Berenice N. (Gross) Bonar, and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1950. As a young man he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves and was married in Churubusco on March 2, 1952, to Betty J. Leitch.
A lifelong resident of Churubusco, he had been employed at the former Leitch’s Market in Churubusco, and later worked as an insurance agent at the former Isay Insurance Agency in Churubusco. In 1984 he started Bonar Insurance in Churubusco and owned and operated the agency for 24 years, retiring in 2008.
He was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, and served as the church’s treasurer for many years. In his early adult years he coached little league baseball and was a former member of the Churubusco Volunteer Fire Department. An avid tennis player for much of his life, he started the tennis program at Churubusco High School and coached there for many years. He had been honored as the grand marshal of Churubusco’s annual Turtle Days Parade, enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s athletic events, and had also enjoyed wintering in Florida.
The surviving relatives include his wife: Betty; to whom he was married for over 63 years; three sons: Gary L. (Gisele) Bonar, Churubusco; Mark A. (Teresa) Bonar, Albion; and Jeff L. Bonar, Fort Wayne; a brother: Glenn (Kathleen) Bonar, Churubusco; his sister: Rosemary Berry, Churubusco; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother: John Bonar; and by a brother-in-law: William E. Berry.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, at the Churubusco United Methodist Church with Rev. Corinne Boruff-Stucker, officiating. The family will receive friends at Sheets and Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, or at the church one hour prior to the service Wednesday morning.
Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, south of Churubusco.
