ELKHART — It was a “Welcome to the NLC” type of night for a young Wawasee boys swim team. The Warriors traveled to Concord to take on a seasoned Minutemen squad and fell 116-70.

It was nearly a sweep for Concord as the host team won 11 of the evening’s 12 events. From start to finish the Minutemen were able to prove why they have been near the top of the Northern Lakes Conference for so long. Wawasee’s Logan Brugh was the lone swimmer to keep Concord from scoring a sweep as the senior won the 200 free over Kallaghan Findley with a time of 1:50.26.

Brugh would later take second in the 500 free (4:51.69) as Concord’s Stephen Krecsmar (4:49.91) earned the top time in the event. Krecsmar also won the 200 IM over Wawasee’s Brady Robinson (2:01.35) with a time of 2:00.15. Robinson, who entered the meet 4-0 in individual events, would later finish second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.90, narrowly falling to Findley’s time of 1:03.66.

Wawasee has grown somewhat accustomed to watching Brugh and Robinson win their events so far in this young season. But at this point of the year it is really not about who finishes where, it’s about the times.

“As a whole group we still need to work on racing instead of just swimming, especially for the younger swimmers,” said Wawasee head coach Julie Robinson. “Even though some of the races aren’t what you think they will be, like Logan not winning the 500 or Brady not winning his races, those boys were still very close to their lifetime bests.”

That’s what matters most for these swimmers at this point, whether or not they are improving. For some of the younger swimmers, things still need to click, but for Brugh and Robinson there is no reason to be hitting a panic button.

“Logan having the time he has right now is great,” Robinson continued. “He’s really excited because he’s never been that fast at this point in the season. So, there was a lot of stuff to really be excited about. Isaiah Metcalf had an awesome 200 free with a lifetime best and then turned around and is swimming the 100 fly for me instead of the 100 breast and he’s doing a really nice job with that as well.”

Metcalf’s lifetime mark in the 200 free now stands at 2:06.19. Jake Cowan also turned in a lifetime best in both the 100 fly (1:02.83) and 100 back (1:07.63). Jared Krugman swam a lifetime best in the 100 back with his second place time of 1:01.51. Paul Rees won the event for Concord with a time of 1:00.49. Jacob Krugman also had a lifetime best, his came in the 100 breast (1:12.50), good enough for third.

In diving Concord’s Dae’Quan Quinn took first (252.55) as the Minutemen would sweep the top three spots. Wawasee was led by Austin Dunithan’s score of 164.45. Brady Claassen (145.50) and Hunter Hlutke (125.40) rounded out the diving scores for the Warriors.

Wawasee (1-2, 1-2) will host its invite this weekend beginning at 10 a.m.
