Raiders Earn Double Sweep, Tigers Top Chargers
MIDDLEBURY – Northridge swept the whole house Tuesday night. Warsaw swept just the living room.
The Raiders won both boys and girls duals against Warsaw and Elkhart Memorial while the Tigers took both girls and boys meets from the Chargers.
Northridge bested the Memorial boys 133-37 and the girls 130-53 and beat Warsaw’s boys 109-71 and girls 129-57. Warsaw would pick up the split with a 140-40 boys win against Memorial and 99-84 girls win against the Lady Chargers.
Warsaw’s Brenna Morgan was the lone Tiger girls swimmer to break through with a win against the usually tough Northridge contingent. Morgan raced Ridge’s Lauren Miller in the 50 in what was a nailbiter finish. Morgan touched at 24.83 to Miller’s 24.84 in what should shape up to be a whale of a competition at conference in a month. The two would come back in the 100 and virtually do the exact same thing, with Morgan winning at 53.50 and Miller back at 53.55.
Northridge won the other 10 events, led by the butterfly and breaststroke wins from Sydnee Emerson. Warsaw’s work in the 100 free, the medley and 200 free relays, as well as diving gave the Lady Tigers the advantage in the win over Memorial.
“A little slow at first, and never picked up in a few of the freestyle areas, but overall I think we did well,” said Warsaw head coach Tony DeBrota of his girls. “We saw some career and season bests out of the girls and the divers helped out with points. I think our finishes and relay starts just looked plain bad. We are going to have to work more on those.”
Matt Wildman was the lone wolf swimmer to record a win against the mighty Northridge machine. Wildman claimed the 50 in a 23.26 winner, otherwise, Ridge took the other 10 events. Tyler Paseka and Nick Bell were the only two divers working, and both Warsaw scores counted. Paseka scored a 198.65 and Bell a 178.05.
Northridge’s depth was on display Tuesday, with seven different swimmers earning a win. Notables included Spencer Lehman in the butterfly, Jesse Drake in the 500 and Camden Koch in the individual medley.
In the Memorial dual, Warsaw swept seven of the events including diving, and gave up just five places to Memorial.
Warsaw moves to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in the NLC in boys and 3-2 and 2-2 in girls. Both teams will compete at home Saturday against former coach Nate Long and his Goshen Redskins. Diving is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
