Triton Goes 1-1, Wawasee Drops Pair In Tourney

basketballBOURBON – There was good news and bad news Saturday for the Triton girls basketball team.

The good news was that the Trojans won their first game of the season in their own tournament.

The bad news was that Triton then had to face Class 3-A power Lebanon in the championship contest Saturday night.

Lebanon, ranked No. 8 in Class 3-A, rolled past Triton 72-15 in the title tilt.

Senior Kristen Spolyar capped a prolific scoring day for the champions with 42 points versus the host Trojans in the finale of the four-team event. Spolyar, a 5-10 forward who has signed to play for Butler University next year, hit 13-25 field goals and went 15-17 from the free throw line in the rout.

Lebanon outscored Triton 23-2 in the opening period of the final. The Trojans were just 6-24 from the field and had 40 turnovers in the contest. Lebanon also went 24-38 from the line in the game.

Brooklyn Beatty led Triton with four points in the title contest.

The day started on a high note for the hosts as Triton used a second-half surge to edge Leo 26-24. The Trojans outscored Leo 17-8 in the second half to post their first win of the season.

Jaela Meister led the Trojans with 12 points, including a 7-8 effort from the free throw line. Nicole Sechrist had six points and seven rebounds and Sarah Stevens five points for Triton in the win.

Morgan Sanderson and Abbie Hieschen each scored eight points to pace Leo.

Triton, now 1-7, hosts LaVille Wednesday.

Wawasee dropped a pair of games Saturday at the Triton tournament.

The Warriors lost 66-50 to Lebanon in a first-round game as Spolyar tossed in 30 points. Wawasee led 11-8 after the opening period before Lebanon took control with a big second stanza to lead 29-17 at halftime.

Kylee Rostochak had a strong game for the Warriors with 25 points. Aubrey Schmeltz netted 13 points for Wawasee.

Wawasee then lost 50-35 to Leo in the consolation contest. Leo built a 27-13 halftime edge en route to the win.

Kylee Rostochak led the Warriors with 11 points. Hannah Marie-Lamle scored eight and Schmeltz seven for the Warriors.

Wawasee, now 2-4, plays at West Noble Tuesday night.

Lebanon (6-2) hosts Hamilton Heights Monday night. Leo (5-3) hosts Columbia City Dec. 5.
