TORONTO — Shane Farberman knows how to clown around.
He’s been doing it professionally for 32 years, but it’s not his funny chops giving Farberman — known better by his clown name, Doo Doo — worldwide attention.
He’s being recognized for his quick thinking in an incident far more serious than his usual work.
People are calling Doo Doo a hero.
“I’m used to getting five-10 emails a day,” he said. “I have 12,000. Twelve thousand e-mails.”
Doo Doo the clown was driving in downtown Toronto Sunday afternoon when he noticed a man acting strangely.
“I see a guy running and jumping on cars, just with shorts and shirt, no shoes, jumping up and down I see people jumping out of cars,” Doo Doo said. “The guy’s running around pushing people, so I call 911.”
He, his cousin and two other clowns in the car — one of them pregnant — followed the man.
Doo Doo’s dashcam recorded the man approaching two women and then he turned around and attacked them.
While you can’t see the action, you can hear the clown screaming.
The women managed to get in to the clown car before the man started attacking the car.
The man ripped the side view mirror off, but the women and the clowns were safe as police arrived and apprehended him.
For a clown used to making a spectacle, this was like nothing he’d ever seen before.
“You’re right,” Doo Doo said. “I look for attention. I’m a children’s entertainer. I’ve been doing this and this is not the kind of attention I was looking for.”
It’s an incident that has left the entertainer shaken.
“When I got home, first thing when Igot home…I don’t want to get emotional. First thing my daughter, 12 years old came up and said, ‘Dad, you’re my hero.’ See, I can’t say it. I get emotional and I got a big hug and it was a nice feeling from your kids.”
But, the sad clown realizes it could have been much worse if he hadn’t stepped in.
The attacker faces three charges. Police believe it was a drug-related incident.
As for Doo Doo, he’s now got a story that matches his catch phrase — Unbelievable!
