The first ever Geocaching event, the International Film Festival, or GIFF, was held on Nov. 7 at the Syracuse Public Library. This is the third year for the event and the first time to be offered outside of Seattle. The Syracuse Library was one of 500 locations around the world that showed the movie featuring the 16 final films submitted to the 2015 Geocaching film contest. Local Geocachers were joined at the GIFF by a couple from Kentucky who wanted to attend and receive the free electronic souvenir. Information about Geocaching and setting up a cache is available at the Syracuse Library.

There is a special prize for those that wear their bowtie. A range of ages attend the “Doctor Who” meetings where theme food, an episode and a game are on the agenda.

Other Events

This is about the last week for story times. Monday story times end on Monday, Nov. 30 , but this is the last time for Tuesday stories. Story times start at 10:30 a.m.

Toddler dance time meets at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25,  to move to child friendly music. Children will have a break and a snack but still go home ready to rest.

The library is closing on Thursday, Nov. 26, so that the staff can have time with their families. Obviously, the Thursday knitting groups will resume the following week. There will be only three more weeks to work on gifts.

What is a Cardinal Doing in Alabama?

Seven states claim the cardinal as their state bird, mostly in the midwest. “Redbird Christmas” is the book that the adult book club, ‘One Book, One hour’ is reading for next month’s meeting. Fannie Flagg is known for writing a sappy Southern story that many people then adore. Her characters are real, candid and often challenged, and the holiday selection of the book club is no different. The book will be discussed at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9. The Syracuse Library may be contacted at (574) 457-3022.
