WARSAW — A Warrensburg, Mo., woman is behind bars in Kosciusko County after defrauding a local resident and keeping the item he purchased.

On March 20, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Bucher spoke with a resident who stated he found a Remington 700, 30-06 caliber rifle on a website. He contacted the seller by email and made arrangements to purchase the rifle for $1,000 now and $350 at a later date. The buyer was told to make the check out to a Michelle Davis.

The local buyer obtained a cashier’s check from a local bank and sent the check to Davis at the address he was given. He was advised the check was cashed on March 16, at Central Missouri Community Credit Union in Warrensburg, Mo., giving Davis $100 and placing a six-day hold on the remaining amount.

Police were told as of April 2, the buyer had not received the firearm and sent numerous emails to the seller who advised she would send the firearm.

Records of the credit union were obtained through a subpoena, verifying the account where the check was cashed was that of Davis. A copy of the cashier’s check and surveillance video of the transaction were also received. Through comparison of Davis’ driver’s license and surveillance video she was identified as the person cashing the check.
