Not The Start Warsaw Had Hoped
HUNTINGTON – A lot of anticipation in the offseason came to a boil for Saturday night’s opener for the Warsaw girls basketball team. Host Huntington North didn’t get the memo, pounding the Tigers 60-32 Saturday night.
Ellie Lawson played almost a perfect game for Huntington, hitting all six of her field goals – including four three-pointers – made both of her free throw attempts and committed just one turnover. Lawson finished with 18 points and chipped in two rebounds and an assist.
Sarah Fryman had 11 points and Rileigh Johnson added 10 points for the Vikings, which shot 49 percent (21-43) from the floor and hit seven three-pointers on the night. Huntington stormed out to a 19-4 lead after the first quarter and only made it worse with a 33-11 advantage at the half.
Warsaw had a miserable shooting night, hitting just 24 percent (9-38) and made only two of its 13 three-point attempts. The Tigers also committed 19 turnovers that translated into 20 Vikings points.
Page Desenberg and Mariah Rivera led the Tigers with seven points each, Desenberg adding in six rebounds to lead the club. Dayton Groninger chipped in six points as the sharp-shooting guard managed just five shots.
The Huntington JV also had a good 32 minutes Saturday, beating Warsaw 46-38.
The hosts made it a clean sweep with the freshman team beating Warsaw 43-38.
Huntington North (2-0) will visit Fort Wayne Carroll Tuesday while Warsaw (0-1) will look to regroup Tuesday at Fort Wayne Luers.
