Melvin Douglas “Doug” Mickem, 78, of Syracuse, died peacefully with family at his side Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at IU Health Goshen Hospital.
He was born Feb. 5, 1937 to Melvin V. and Marie (Lewis) Mickem.
A 1955 graduate of LaGrange High School, he served with the US Air Force and was a member of the American Legion Post 223, Syracuse.
Mickem worked as a district foreman for the Indiana State Highway Department, retiring in 2003. He also worked for the City of Goshen Engineering Department. Doug enjoyed helping his neighbors and spending time with friends.
Doug’s love and admiration for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was obvious to all who knew him.
Mickem is survived by six children: Mitzi Jaenichen and Melanie (Mark) Farver, both of Goshen, Mark Mickem of Topeka, Mick (Abigail) Mickem of Warsaw, David (Mandy) Mickem of Rolla, Mo., and Jon (Jenn) Mickem of Bryant; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Larry, Terry, Steve and Tony Mickem.
Friends may call from noon-2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, 1911 S. Main St., Goshen. There will be a military graveside service at Eden Cemetery, Topeka, immediately following the visitation.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or to the American Legion Post 223.
