INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis zoo announced Thursday its newest member to its forests family — a baby white-handed gibbon. And, it’s the first gibbon ever born at the zoo.

The gibbon, whose gender is not yet known, was born at 7:15 p.m. Oct. 23 and is the first baby for mother Koko and father Elliot.

A gibbon is a small, slender tree-dwelling ape native to the forests of Southeast Asia. They are vocal animals and sing to attract mates. The babies even begin to sing along with their parents.

The zoo said gibbons are native to warmer areas, the zoo’s animals are only allowed outside when temperatures reach at least 60 degrees. But, with recent Indianapolis temperatures in the 70s, you may catch a glimpse of the newborn at the zoo.
