SEATTLE — Seattle’s Pike Place Market is getting ready to scrub down its iconic gum wall.

It will be stripped of all the gum for the first time in 20 years.

The dirty work begins Nov. 10 and is expected to take a few days.

There are an estimated 150 pieces of gum per brick, and likely more than one million gum wads on that wall.

Don’t worry, you can resume posting your sweet, sticky memories on the wall again after it’s cleaned.

“I believe that within 24 hours there will be gum back on the gum wall and we expect that and we think that’s great,” said Emily Crawford, a spokesperson for the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority. “We really want the gum wall to remain part of Pike Place Market. People do love it, people enjoy it, and it’s a really fun spirited thing that’s a part of Pike Place Market and we do fully expect it to come back.”

The market is hosting a photo contest celebrating the gum wall, which runs through Monday.

All visitors have to do is snap a photo of the wall, and upload the picture to the Pike Place Market Facebook page.

The winners will get a personalized market charm to be installed on the new market front.
