Marian Claims Boys Soccer Title

IHSAA SportsINDIANAPOLIS – The Marian boys soccer team claimed its first-ever boys soccer state title Saturday, shutting out Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter, 3-0, in the IHSAA Boys Soccer Class 1-A final played at Carroll Stadium on the campus of IUPUI.

Augustin Hartnagel, Oscar Tavarez and Jordan Morris all scored for the Knights, which rang up 24 shots in the contest to Ritter’s four. Michael Cataldo made three saves for the clean sheet for Marian, which finishes 20-2 in its championship run. Ritter wraps up 16-7-1.

In the Class 2-A girls finals, Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit rallied with a pair of second-half goals to beat Penn 2-1. Kristina Lynch got the Kingsmen on the board in the second minute and the lead held into the second half.

Brebeuf got the equalizer from Hallie Pearson in the 59th, then had Audrey Heile tuck home the championship goal in the 74th minute. Brebeuf peppered Penn with 12 shots in the second half and 19 overall, forcing Kingsmen keeper Mackenzie Wood to make seven saves. Penn uncorked only six shots in the match.

Brebeuf finishes 22-2-1 overall while Penn suffers its only loss of the season, settling at 21-1-2.

In the class 1-A girls final, Fort Wayne Canterbury (17-4-1) won its second straight title with a 3-2 win over Evansville Mater Dei. The overtime affair had Abby Bergeron score her second goal of the match in the 84th minute, which held up. Sydney Colby had a goal and two assists for Canterbury, which also got nine saves in net from Alexa Habig.

Mater Dei (18-4-2) had goals from Abby Schoenstein and Lily Hoffman.

In the class 2-A boys final, Center Grove poured it on in a resounding 4-0 win over Lafayette Harrison. The Grove (20-2-1) got goals from Hayden Gorall, Conrad Bomber, Nathan Silva and Roman Johnson. Logan Wade made nine saves for the clean sheet in net. Harrison finishes 19-3-1.
