Area Soccer, Volleyball Teams In Tourney Action Saturday
The high school fall sports season will come to an end in Indianapolis Saturday for a pair of area soccer teams.
Both the Penn girls team and the Mishawaka Marian boys squad hopes to return North with a state championship trophy in tow to conclude the 2015 postseason.
No. 2 Penn will play No. 4 Brebeuf Jesuit in the Class 2-A girls soccer state title match at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Penn is 21-0-2 on the season, while Brebeuf sports a 21-2-1 mark. The Kingsmen have won their last 20 matches.
The State Finals begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Carroll Stadium on the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis. No. 4 Fort Wayne Canterbury (15-3-1) will face No. 2 Evansville Mater Dei (18-3-2) in the Class 1-A girls title contest.
Marian, which is 19-2 on the season and ranked No. 2, will face No. 8 Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter (16-6-1) in the Class 1-A boys finale following the Canterbury-Mater Dei girls game.
The Class 2-A boys title match will be the last state champion crowned. No. 8 Lafayette Harrison (19-2-1) faces No. 7 Center Grove (19-2-1).
It will also be a busy day on Saturday for several area volleyball teams as semistate action takes place. Two wins in semistate earns a team a spot in the IHSAA State Finals on No. 7 at Ball State University in Muncie.
No. 10 Elkhart Memorial, champions of the Penn Sectional, will play in the Class 4-A Plymouth Semistate. The Crimson Chargers, who won the Northern Lakes Conference title this fall, face Carroll at 11 a.m. Memorial rallied Tuesday night to beat host LaPorte 3-2 in a regional match. The second semifinal at Plymouth will have Crown Point versus Hamilton Southeastern. The championship is set for 7 p.m.
South Bend St. Joseph and New Prairie will play in opposite brackets of the Class 3-A Semistate at Twin Lakes High School in Monticello. The Indians face Leo in the second match, which follows the 11 a.m. opener pitting New Prairie versus powerhouse Yorktown. The finale is set for 7 p.m.
Rochester and Westview will face each other at the Class 2-A Bremen Semistate. The 11 a.m. opener features Wapahani versus Hammond Bishop Noll, with the Zebras then playing the Warriors. The title match begins at 6 p.m.
