The Elkhart Memorial volleyball team is headed back to the semistate.
The No. 10 Crimson Chargers used a championship rally Tuesday night to come back to edge host LaPorte 3-2 to claim a Class 4-A regional title.
Memorial, which lost in the semistate final a year ago, advances to play No. 6 Carroll on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the opening semifinal match of the Plymouth Semistate. Carroll defeated Memorial 2-0 in an invitational a couple of weeks ago, but the Chargers were not at full strength for that match.
Coach Jacquie Rost’s team, which won the Penn Sectional title this past Saturday, showed its postseason mettle once again to sideline the Slicers on their home floor.
LaPorte dropped the opening game 25-16 to Memorial, but then evened the match by winning the second set 25-20. The Slicers then stunned Memorial by winning the final eight points of the third set to post a 25-23 win and take a 2-1 edge in the match.
The Chargers claimed the fourth set in dominating fashion 25-17 after a fast start to even the tilt. The fifth and deciding set was close throughout as neither team led by more than one point. LaPorte led 12-11 before Memorial scored three points in a row for a 14-12 advantage. The Slicers got the next point before Kayona Malone put away the game winner for the Chargers.
Bailey Brouwer and Darrian Mowery led the offensive charge for the Chargers as each totaled 14 kills. Autumn Taylor added 14 kills and Christa Knapp eight. Brouwer had four blocks and Taylor two. Krystal Grubb racked up 53 assists. Mowery and Taylor each had two aces and Kaylin Szucs led the defense with 34 digs, while Taylor had 15 and Grubb 13.
Memorial improves to 28-9, while LaPorte finishes at 22-17.
NorthWood saw its season end Tuesday night with a 3-1 home loss to Leo.
The opening game proved to be a big key in the Class 3-A regional matchup in Nappanee. The host Panthers, who won the West Noble Sectional on Saturday, led 24-20 before Leo rallied for a 29-27 win.
The Panthers took the second set 25-20 before Leo took the match by winning the third set 25-20 and then taking the fourth 25-9.
Leo advances to play South Bend St. Joseph on Saturday in the Twin Lakes Semistate.
Kennedy Wiens had 18 kills and Sydney Wysong had 16 kills and 19 digs to lead NorthWood.
The Panthers finish the season at 21-15.
Westview rolled to a regional title Tuesday night at home with a 3-0 win over South Adams.
The Warriors posted a 25-18, 25-15, 25-10 win in the Class 2-A matchup.
Westview, now 30-5, advances to play either Rochester or Covington on Saturday in the Bremen Semistate. Rochester plays Covington in their regional match Wednesday night.
Maria McCoy had 10 kills and four blocks and Grace Hales nine kills to pace Westview in the regional match.
