Goshen Duo Alive In Tennis State Finals
INDIANAPOLIS – While Indianapolis North Central claimed the IHSAA boys tennis team state championship last weekend, the individual state champions have yet to be decided. Among the individuals waiting to take aim are Goshen’s one doubles team, Penn’s one doubles team and a singles slugger from Culver Academy.
Goshen senior Luke Rush and junior Logan Troyer are alive in the doubles tournament, having already won all six of its tournament matches to date. The duo are 19-1 as a team this season, its lone loss to South Bend St. Joseph’s in a dual Sept. 14. Rush and Troyer were Northern Lakes Conference, sectional and regional champions and were the lone team to win against Leo in the semi-state, where the Lions knocked out Goshen’s team from the state tournament.
Goshen will face Penn’s doubles tandem of Thomas Gifford and Tim Porsche, which have compiled a 17-3 record this season and have won all seven of its postseason matchups. Penn was eliminated from the team tournament in the regional final by St. Joe. The Kingsmen reached the state round by knocking out teams from Andrean and Westview.
Sam Concannon, a senior for Culver Academy, has shaken hands at the net 19 times this season a winner, none as a loser. Concannon is 6-0 in the postseason, helped by Culver Academy’s run to the state finals where the Eagles were beaten in the quarters by Jeffersonville 3-2.
Play will begin Friday at Park Tudor High School in Indianapolis with the quarterfinals, and pick up again Saturday with the remainder of the championship tournament.
