volleyballINDIANAPOLIS – Will a change of sectional scenery mean a different outcome this time around for the Warsaw volleyball team?

Time will tell.

The Tigers now know that they will need just two wins to claim the program’s first sectional title since 2004.

Warsaw drew the bye in the seven-team Class 4-A sectional set for Penn. The IHSAA made the state tournament draw this morning for the 44th annual tournament, which begins statewide next week.

The Tigers will face either NLC rival Elkhart Memorial or Concord in the semifinal match at Penn on Oct. 24. Coach Mike Howard’s team is 20-7 on the season and plays at Penn tonight before hosting Carroll Wednesday and their own Tiger Spiker Invitational Saturday to wrap up the regular season.

Warsaw has played strong of late with seven straight wins. The Tigers closed regular-season league play last Thursday with a 3-0 win at Concord. Warsaw did lose 3-1 to Memorial and 3-2 to Northridge in NLC matches, but were without two key players in the loss to Northridge. The Tigers also lost 2-0 to Memorial in the Mishawaka Invitational early in the season. Warsaw also beat Concord 2-0 in the Michigan City Invitational last month.

Memorial won the sectional title last year at Concord, in a six-team field that did not include Penn. The Crimson Chargers, who advanced to the semistate a year ago, are 22-5 with a pair of wins over Warsaw this season so far. Coach Jacquie Rost’s team is not at full strength right now as standout Darrian Mowery is out due to an ankle injury. Her status for the sectional, which Memorial opens versus Concord on Oct. 20, is still unknown. Memorial has won seven of the last eight sectionals they have played in.

Memorial is unbeaten versus teams in the sectional field this season. The Chargers own wins over every team in the field and went 7-0 to win the Northern Lakes Conference title, beating Concord, Warsaw, Goshen and Northridge (all in the Penn Sectional) along the way. Memorial also defeated both Penn and city rival Central in regular-season play so far this season.

Memorial and Penn have not played in the same sectional for nine years. Penn has won seven sectionals in a row during that time, but has struggled to a 16-12 record this season. The Kingsmen won back-to-back Class 4-A state championships in 2010 and 2011.

Tippecanoe Valley and Wawasee will take part in the Class 3-A sectional at West Noble. The Vikings face NorthWood in a first-round match Oct. 22, while the Warriors drew host West Noble in the bye semifinal match on Oct. 24.

Whitko, which has had an outstanding season, will face LaVille in the Class 2-A Central Noble Sectional on Oct. 22. The Wildcats beat Valley 3-2 last week, but star player Kaity Reed of Whitko was injured in the match.

Triton will play in the tourney opener at the Class 1-A Culver Sectional on Oct. 20. The Trojans face Oregon-Davis in the first match of the seven-team sectional field.

Lakeland Christian Academy will play in the sectional opener at the Class 1-A Bethany Christian Sectional. The Cougars face Elkhart Christian Academy on Oct. 22.

Regionals are scheduled for Oct. 27 with the sectional winners from West Noble, Central Noble and Culver hosting the one-match event. The Penn Sectional winner will play at the South Bend Adams Sectional champion in the regional round. The West Noble champ hosts the Fort Wayne Luers Sectional winner, while the Central Noble winner hosts the Woodlan Sectional champ and the Culver winner entertains the Bethany Christian Sectional winner.

Semistates are Saturday, Oct. 31 with area regional winners advancing to Plymouth (4-A), Twin Lakes (3-A), Bremen (2-A) and Caston (1-A).

The State Finals are set for Nov. 7 at Ball State University.
