CULVER – The Plymouth boys tennis team saw its stellar season end Wednesday night at the hands of Culver Academies.
The host Eagles topped the Pilgrims 3-2 in the title match of the Culver Academies Regional.
No. 20 CMA, now 16-2, earns its 11th regional championship and fifth in the the last six years. The Eagles beat Plymouth 4-1 in the regional final a year ago before winning the semistate title and then losing in the quarterfinal round of the State Finals.
Culver Academies will play back at home again on Saturday in a noon semistate matchup versus either Munster of Merrillville.
The Eagles, who beat Plymouth 4-1 in a regular-season meeting on Sept. 29, dominated at all three singles spots Wednesday night to win the regional crown.
Senior Sam Concannon bested senior John Hunter 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Concannon was second in the state tournament series for No. 1 singles players a year ago.
Senior Chris Bilicic topped junior John Gerard 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Senior Josh Thompkins completed the win by downing sophomore Tommy Holloway 6-4, 6-1.
The Pilgrims claimed both doubles matches with tremendous three-set wins.
The Plymouth No. 1 doubles team of seniors Braydon Davidson and Nate Knapp rallied to beat seniors William Bilicic and Brian Tao 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (7). Davidson and Knapp advance in the state tourney series for No. 1 doubles teams who are unbeaten in postseason play.
The team of juniors Nick Felke and Grant Clady outlasted seniors Evan Dillon and Ean Anderson 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (2) at No. 2 doubles.
Plymouth finishes its season at 15-5.
