WARSAW — Indiana American Water has issued a boil advisory for approximately 75 customers located on the city’s northeast side after a private contractor working in the area struck a water main late this morning near Husky Trail and North Parker Street. The break, which has since been repaired, caused pressure in the area to drop to less than 20 pounds per square inch.

The affected area is roughly bounded on the north by Hecter Ditch, on the west by US 30, on the south by Patterson Road and on the east by North CR 175 East (see map). Affected areas include Canterbury House Apartments, Harrison Elementary School, the Parkview Warsaw YMCA, and the Harrison Ridge and Silver Fox Ridge subdivisions and several other area businesses. Indiana American Water customers in the boil advisory area are advised to drink and cook with tap water only after boiling it for approximately three minutes. Tap water can be used for washing/bathing.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management mandates precautionary boil advisories to ensure high-quality water in the event water pressure drops below 20 psi in any part of a distribution system. According to company officials, boil advisories are issued as a precaution with a customer’s best interests in mind. It’s possible, but unlikely, bacteria could enter the water system when pressure in the line drops below 20 psi.

During the boil water advisory, the water company performs a series of tests to determine if the water meets regulatory drinking water standards. Any additional information regarding this boil advisory will be shared with affected residents and through local media outlets. Precautionary boil water notices usually last from 18 to 24 hours. Unless otherwise notified through local media, the boil advisory will be lifted at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18. Additional information on water alerts is available online.

Indiana American Water serves a total of approximately 4,500 customers, or a population of 16,000 in its Warsaw service area.
