Herbert Earl “Herb” Metcalf, 85, of Milford, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 8:40 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2015, at his residence. He was born on July 27, 1930, in Adamsville, Mich. to Ray Lucas and Marjorie Irene (Landis) Metcalf.
He graduated from Bristol High School in Bristol, and attended college in Florida. He was married to Donna Gentzhorn who preceded him in death in 1968 and then on Aug. 3, 1973, in Elkhart, he married Nellie M. (Hicks) Jessie who survives. He retired in 1993 from Goshen Stamping after 12 years. He was also a self-employed carpet installer and was the former owner and operator of Herb’s Place restaurant in Elkhart. He lived in the Kosciusko County area for many years.
He was a member of the Nappanee Missionary Church, an avid fisherman, gardener and cook.
He is survived by his wife: Nellie Metcalf, Milford; six sons: Brian (Pat) Metcalf, Rainier, Wash.; Barry Metcalf, Bristol; Brent (Traci) Metcalf, South Bend; Walter (Nancy) Hershberger, Mentone; Roger (Rita) Hershberger, Goshen; and Rick (Diana) Hersberger, Cabot, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Ella Richmond, Goshen; Diane (Roger) Nusbaum, Fla.; and Darlene (Randy) Price, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; son: Patrick Glen Metcalf; sister: Vera Overmyer; and brother: Ray Metcalf.
Visitation will from 10-11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Nappanee Missionary Church, Nappanee. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. Friday in the church chapel with Pastor Chris Knight and Justin Lamason of the church officiating. Cremation and services are being handled by Cremation Services of Kosciusko County.
Memorial bequests may be given to the Nappanee Missionary Church April Hershberger Baby Center Orphanage Fund, Nappanee.
