Warsaw SportsELKHART – The combination of experience and speed up top for the Elkhart Memorial boys soccer team was simply too much for Warsaw to handle Tuesday night.

The rainy conditions didn’t help matters much either for the Tigers.

The Crimson Chargers shrugged off an early one goal deficit as easy as they did the steady raindrops that fell in topping the Tigers 3-1 in a Northern Lakes Conference match.

The duo of senior Jaime Garcia and junior Jaime Mayorga each had a goal and an assist to pace the hosts to the league win.

Memorial improves to 6-4 overall and moves to 2-1 in NLC play with wins over Warsaw and Concord (2-1) and a loss to Goshen (2-1).

The rebuilding Tigers fall to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in league play with setbacks to Memorial, Plymouth (2-0) and Concord (5-1).

Warsaw, coming off a pair of losses on Saturday in the Carroll Tournament, got off to a great start Tuesday night in the steady rain. Edward Esqueda, one of seven seniors, put the Tigers up 1-0 with a goal just 2:20 into the match.

The storyline was the same for an inexperienced Warsaw side after the first quick goal. The Tigers, who have scored a total of just six goals all season, could not string together possessions or attacks.

Warsaw, which saw its string of six straight sectional and regional championships snapped a year ago, simply does not have a big foot as in the past to provide goals. The Tigers graduated a slew of experience from last year’s team, including offensive standouts like Tito Cuellar and Sam Allbritten.

“We just don’t have a scorer,” remarked Warsaw coach Frank Courtois. “You’re just not going to win without a scoring threat. We work on shooting drills every day and then no one wants to take a shot in games. We just have a lot of inexperienced guys right now.”

The highly-respected Courtois, who took over this season after serving as the JV coach for more than a decade, refused to blame the slippery conditions for anything. Memorial’s goals came on a ball off the hands of the Warsaw keeper and on a couple of other plays in which he slipped trying to keep his footing to make saves.

“You can’t use the rain as an excuse,” Courtois said. “The conditions were the same for both sides. I just feel like we gave them three goals tonight.”

The Chargers, who finished 10-5-3 overall and 4-3 in the NLC in 2014, tied the game on a goal by Mayorga (assisted by Garcia) at the 24:30 mark. Memorial took the lead for good at 2-1 on a score by senior Daniel Brummet, assied by Mayorga, with 15:52 left in the opening half. The hosts concluded the scoring just 90 seconds into the final half as Garcia scored, assited by sophomore Fabian Rodriguez, as the Warsaw keeper slipped.

“Their speed created problems for us on top and with an inexperienced team that makes it harder on us,” said Courtois. “If we possess the ball, we can create shots. Our kids just get in a hurry and speed up too much.”

Memorial had eight shots on goal to six for the Tigers. Sophomore Colton Wottring had five saves for Warsaw. Junior keeper Diego Reynoso had five stops for Memorial.

Memorial, which returned its top goal scorer in Brummet and top assist man in Garcia, won 10-1 over Logansport and 9-1 over Mishawaka Saturday in the Blueberry Festival Tournament in Plymouth. Mayorga had three goals in one win and Brummet three in the other victory.

The Chargers won the junior varsity contest 2-0. Sophomore Jesus Fernandez scored both goals in the first half for Memorial.

Warsaw will host NorthWood Sept. 15 and Memorial host Northridge Thursday in NLC action.
