Notre Dame SportsSOUTH BEND – The news was not all good for Notre Dame Saturday night.

The No. 11 Irish routed Texas 38-3 in the season opener, but they lost running back Tarean Folston for the season because of a torn MCL.

Folston will have surgery in the next 10 days and will not play again in 2015.

“We’re certainly dissapointed for Tarean,”  Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Sunday. “He’s worked hard to get to where he is.”

Folston, who was injured in the first quarter versus Texas, has been Notre Dame’s leading rusher the last two seasons. His loss is a major blow to the Irish, who already lost Greg Bryant to a season long academic suspension. Bryant has since transferred from the university.

CJ Prosise, who converted from  to running back in the spring, stepped up in a big way Saturday night rushing for 98 yards on 20 carries.

Freshman Josh Adams rushed for two touchdowns and 49 yards on five carries.

“Josh has really done well in pass protection and learning the offense and obviously he will now get a lot more work,” Kelly said. “He has surprisingly picked it up better than I thought he would. The  game of football comes to him easily. For Josh, it seems to click a lot easier for him.”

Fellow freshman Dexter Williams will be the third running back.

“”Dexter is going to be thrust into more duty as a freshman,” Kelly said. “We didn’t really expect to have to accelerate Dexter–we will pickup his preparation,” Kelly stated. “There is a learning curve there that we have to accerlate.”

Kelly said walk-on turned scholarship running back Josh Anderson could also be in the mix.

Notre Dame travels to Virginia Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
