Golf Finishes NLC Above .500

In an up and down season for Warsaw girls golf, a positive note was achieved Thursday as Warsaw won its fourth NLC match of the season, 198-243, over Elkhart Memorial to sit at 4-3 in the conference standings.

Madi Graham again managed the Stonehenge course enough to shoot 45 and serve as match medalist. Delaney Wihebrink came in next at 50, followed by Morgen Fuentes at 51, Page Desenberg at 52 and Madison Martz at 54 to close out Warsaw’s scores.

Memorial struggled mightily on the rolling hills of Stonehenge, having Calandra Clevenger post a 56 as the top score for the Lady Chargers. Kelsey Weaver finished at 59, Skylar Axsom at 62, Cydney Lapzinski at 66 and Micah Baker at 69.

Warsaw’s JV, led by a 54 from Madelyn Ray and 57 from Izzy Ray, shot a 242. Memorial did not have a team JV score.

Warsaw will have a week off before visiting Manchester at Sycamore next Thursday in preparation for the NLC Championships Sept. 12 at Spring Meadow in Middlebury.

Late Jackson Goal Keeps Ladies Undefeated

A fortunate bounce in the waning moments was all it took for Warsaw to keep it’s slate clean. A free kick by Breck Jackson with six minutes remaining found its way to net, lifting Warsaw to a 3-2 girls soccer victory Thursday night against Homestead.

Jackson’s goal, the first of the season for the defensive dynamo, took a bounce and found its way into the waiting net with the score knotted at two.

Warsaw scored its other two goals also in the second half. The first, an Anna Grill strike in the 52nd minute, was assisted on a through ball from Elizabeth Van Wormer. Not to be outdone, Van Wormer found the back of the net in the 65th minute when a Dayle Harvey cross found Van Wormer on the back post, who made no bones in the conversion.

Homestead peppered the Warsaw net with 13 shots, but Chloe Snow was a wall for the most part, making 11 saves in by far her busiest contest to date.

Homestead’s JV team were on the right side of a 3-2 victory in the day’s opening contest.

Warsaw (6-0) will visit Argos Saturday afternoon.
