Syracuse Public Library news and events for the week of Monday, Aug. 24, to Saturday, Aug. 29:
Perennial Groups
Doctor Who
The BBC first presented “Doctor Who” in 1963 as a weekly TV program intended for family education. The official Doctor Who site says that two of the original main characters were science and history teachers and a lot of the early stories had no aliens. These historical stories were phased out at the end of the 60’s as the more alien settings increased in popularity.
The library started last year with the new season one, and is now on season five. The episode where the Doctor meets Vincent Van Gogh is scheduled to show from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26. The group will look at a slide story about the artist Van Gogh to compare with the Van Gogh who is the Doctor’s friend. Meet Doctor Who is open to children and adults who want to talk about Van Gogh’s masterful use of color, his life story, and the Doctor Who storyline.
One Book, One Hour: Ten Years Later
Rosalyn Jones started a book club she called Books and Coffee a long time ago and it continues to meet with many of the original members. Each month the group decides on a book for everyone to read and discuss. The September book has been chosen by Megan McClellan and is by one of her most favorite authors, Barbara Kingsolver. “Flight Behavior,” like many of Kingslover’s stories, takes place in Appalachia.
Reading Kingsolver is an excursion into the world of a native person and a larger significance that is both scientific and spiritual. Each of Kingsolver’s books has appeared on the NY Times Best Sellers List, and so, plenty of copies of “Flight Behavior” are available through the Evergreen system. The Syracuse Library may be contacted at (574) 457-3022.
Dysfunctional Book Club
The Dysfunctional Book Club is meeting in August and September to talk about Randy Wayne White and one more Florida author from the long list of Florida authors. The Aug. discussion and presentation is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, when the next author will be selected.
