footballThe 2015 high school football season arrives Friday night and the area schedule will have plenty of marquee matchups for fans to enjoy.

While Warsaw and Wawasee will both host openers in Kosciusko County, a trio of great games dot the docket in neighboring Elkhart County Friday night.

The battle for city bragging rights and the Mangy Lion trophy has Elkhart Memorial clashing with crosstown rival Elkhart Central at Rice Field. The Blue Blazers won 28-12 a year ago.

Memorial is looking to rebuild under new coach Scot Shaw. Shaw has 26 years of prep coaching experience and guided Fort Wayne Wayne to a 9-2 mark in his only season there in 2014. The Crimson Chargers were 1-9 a year ago and have won just five games over the last three seasons.

The Memorial at Central game will be part of the Great American Rivalry Series. The series, which began in 2004, will showcase 102 top games from 40 different states during the 2015 season. The “We Know Friday Nights” series is presented by the U.S. Marine Corps.  The winning team and game MVP will receive trophies and the top student athletes from both schools will be recognized.

Another key clash of traditon-packed programs comes on the SR 19 heavyweight showdown as Jimtown makes the short trek to Nappanee to face NorthWood at Jim Andrews Field. The Panthers prevailed 14-6 a year ago.
