ELKHART — The Elkhart Police Department helped rescue an injured osprey in the morning hours of Thursday, Aug. 6.

Corporal Todd Thayer took a report of the bird flying into a power line, causing it to fall to the ground. Cpl. Thayer and and a passer-by were able to wrap a blanket around the bird, stabilizing it until EPD animal control officer Cpl. Dennis Russell was able to respond to the scene.

The bird was placed in a cage and transported to the Elkhart County Humane Society, where it was evaluated by a wild bird rehabilitation expert. The osprey was then taken to a veterinarian in Goshen, where it was further evaluated and found to have a muscle injury.

The osprey is currently being treated by a bird rehabilitator, who hopes to be able to return it to the wild in two to three weeks. The osprey measured approximately 20 inches tall, with a wing span of nearly 50 inches.
