WARSAW — Boys ages 12 to 21 are learning what builds the fiber of a man through a new local program. DeMolay, a relatively new program in the county, encourages young men to develop leadership skills and a sense of independence while fostering a spirit of brotherhood. The new chapter meets weekly at the Warsaw Masonic Lodge.

According to Terry Roe, chapter leader and DeMolay alumni, the local DeMolay chapter began in April of 2014. After participating in DeMolay in Kentucky, Roe wanted to continue with the organization locally. This prompted Roe to discuss opening a chapter for area boys at the Warsaw Masonic Lodge.

Though the organization meets weekly at the lodge, Roe notes it is not necessarily a religious institution. According to information provided by the international organization, DeMolay teaches one of the steps toward becoming a happy and successful person by developing a strong faith, tolerance and respect for others.

John Kuhn, DeMolay 17, master counselor and Warsaw Community High School Student, noted since the indoctrination of the local chapter, nine members have joined. Those members spend their time with each other weekly doing activities as well as leading discussions to help strengthen their skills. Among the priorities of the chapter is community service. Kuhn noted the gentleman of DeMolay have volunteered with several area organizations such as Our Father’s House.

Kuhn explained the organization competes at state level events in various topics suited for almost any interest. From sports to ritual and tabletop gaming, men of DeMolay are encouraged to engage competitively with their brothers to build relationships through spirited, good-natured rivalry.

Kameron Reiter, 18, senior counselor and recent WCHS graduate, has found more than just friendship through the organization. Reiter, who plans to attend Valparaiso University for a physics degree, noted DeMolay has assisted him in procuring funds to attend college through scholarships. In addition, Reiter, who is a self professed shy person, stated though his work with the organization, he has come out of his proverbial shell. Reiter can now speak with confidence with not only his peers, but in a public setting as well — a skill he noted has made a world of difference. With his newfound confidence, Reiter plans to join in several student organizations at his future alma mater.

Positions for the organization are still open for men in the public, and a future chapter, called Rainbow, may be on the horizon for young women in the area as well. Students are advised to keep a look out for DeMolay members at their respective schools or contact Roe at (574) 527-1401 for more information.
