syracuseSYRACUSE — Several remonstrators prompted Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals to deny one petition for a variance Thursday evening, July 16.

Paris and Rebecca Ball-Miller’s petition for a variance was denied. The variance would have permitted allowing an existing residence accessory (fireplace and grill) to remain as placed (built into retaining wall) 8 feet from the water’s edge. The property is located at 715 E. Northshore Drive.

Rebecca said the couple did not have a survey conducted prior to the installation of the fireplace and grill three years ago. “I wish I had got a survey. I apologize,” she said.

Thus, these items were encroaching on their neighbor’s property, Ernie Rogers. An encroachment agreement was drafted but Rogers said he would not sign it.

Three letters were submitted and several neighbors at the meeting voiced their dissatisfaction with the variance. After listening to the remonstrators, the petition was denied by the board. The Millers must remove the fireplace and grill from the property within 30 days or submit an appeal.

The second petition, Yoder Family Investment’s petition for a variance, was granted. The property is the site of Wawasee Bowling Alley. The variance would permit allowing 238 square feet of signage, where ordinance allows 200 square-feet.

The property is located at 1201 S. Huntington St. There were no remonstrators.

PW Realty’s petition for a variance was granted. The property is the site of Poly-Wood. The variance would permit the construction of four, 12-by-60 silos 13 feet from the west sideline on a concrete pad 11 feet from the west side line. The silos will be used for raw storage.

The property is located at 927 W. Brooklyn St. There were no remonstrators.

The next meeting is at 6 p.m. Aug. 20, at Syracuse Town Hall.
