Providing transportation for veterans to medical appointments just became a bit easier for the American Legion Post #253 thanks to a $30,000 grant from K21 Health Foundation. The grant was used to assist with the purchase a new van that volunteers use to take veterans from Kosciusko County to various medical appointments.
According to Commander Jeff Spickelmier, “The post supports the most vulnerable of veterans including those who are unable to drive, unable to see due to vision ailments, or have no personal transportation. Our volunteers transport these individuals to various locations throughout the state, including VA hospitals and rehabilitation facilities. In the last five years, the need for transportation has only increased. We are now providing an average of 300 trips per year.”
“This is a terrific program that provides a necessary service to an underserved population in our community,” said K21 Grant Coordinator Holly Swoverland. “K21 is pleased to be able to assist the Post in making a difference in the lives of Kosciusko County veterans.”
The Post began providing this service after a handicapped-accessible van was donated by a member following the death of his wife. Veterans who are in need of transportation to medical appointments are encouraged to contact the American Legion Post #253 by calling 574-834-4297.
