Bernard SimonMr. Bernard Harry Simon, 95, of Rochester, passed away at 9:53 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Peabody Retirement Community of North Manchester.

On May 5, 1920, Bernard was born in Chicago to Harry and Rose Mary Zalud Simon. Answering the call to patriotism, Bernard joined the US Navy. His first stint was from 1938 to 1941. He was a Hospital Apprentice First Class and was honorably discharged. Reenlisting in 1942, he was discharged in 1943 due to in injury causing a physical disability.

Mr. Simon taught in the inner city schools of Indianapolis for 10 years and continued his passion in Chicago for 25 years. After retiring from teaching he made Rochester his home.

Bernard enjoyed visiting with his veteran friends and the ladies at the library. They will miss him and the times they shared.

Preceding Bernard in death are his parents, and his fiance who was killed in an automobile accident by a drunk driver.

Chaplain Charlie Azbell will officiate a graveside service, at 10 a.m. Monday, June 15, at Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Fulton County Honor Guard and the US Navy Honor Guard.
