Akron Carnegie Library will soon be celebrating its 100th birthday, as well as the July 4 holiday. The celebration, which will be held throughout the town over the holiday weekend, will offer something for everyone.
On Thursday, July 2, the celebration begins with the Akron Carnegie Public Library Book Sale. The sale will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday, July 3, events will continue with the book sale kicking off again from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the library. For those who enjoy the fine arts, the Akron Area Arts League Art Show will be held at the Akron Community Center from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Those with a sweet tooth can meander down to the pie and ice cream social at 6 p.m. located at the Akron Community Center.
Carnival games will kick off on Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pike Memorial Park. The Mr. Firecracker and Miss Sparkler contest will be at 6:30 p.m. located at the Akron Community Center. The cutie contest will follow at 6:45 p.m. at the Akron Community Center, sponsored by the Las Donas. Contests will continue with the Miss Akron Contest at 7 p.m. at the community Center and the car show, held at the Akron Elementary School, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Car show registration will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the school.
Music will be provided by “The Dotson’s” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the back side of the community center. Vendors will be available at Pike Memorial Park to sell food and miscellaneous items. Banda Principal will be from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Pike Memorial Park.
Celebrations will continue Saturday, July 4, with the Fireman’s Breakfast from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Henry Township Fire Station. A flag raising will be held at the fire station at 9 a.m. as well.
Active guests can get involved in both a three-on-three basketball tourney at 9 a.m. at Pike Memorial Park or a 5k walk/run from 6:45 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. at Akron Elementary
A parade will be held with line up beginning at 9 a.m. on SR 19 and Front Street. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. beginning at Pine and Rochester streets.
The art show will begin again at the community center from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Fun events for the kids will take place throughout the afternoon with a petting zoo from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Pike Memorial Park as wells as carnival games from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the park. The book sale will continue at the library from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. with tourneys taking place after. Tourneys will include the All-Star Tourney at 1 p.m., held at Pike Memorial Park, and the volleyball tourney, also at the park, held at 1 p.m.
Those with special skills or talents are invited to perform at the Akron Area Arts League Talent Show at 5 pm. at the community center. Carnival games will take place again after, lasting from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Pike Memorial Park. At 7 p.m. the Akron Area Arts League will host a reception at the community center.
The evening events will include music provided by DJ Skorchin’ Skooter with a dance party held from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the park. Fireworks will be held at 10 p.m. in the park.
A softball tourney will be held the following Saturday, July 11, at Pike Memorial Park beginning at 8 a.m.
