A state-mandated ban on poultry transport has canceled any poultry display or related events at the 2015 Kosciusko and Elkhart County 4-H fairs. The ban came after the Indiana State Board of Animal health ordered that all poultry movements cease to prevent the spread of the H5 avian influenza virus.
Communications Manager for Maple Leaf Farms Janelle Deatsman said, “The ban has no effect on Maple Leaf Farms production and distribution. All of our poultry is tested for Avian Influenza before they are transported to our facilities.”
The ban applies to non-commercial poultry. Deatsman says they still plan on taking extra precautions because Avian Influenza is in the state of Indiana but there is no direct threat to Maple Leaf and its production.
