Auction to Sell Pictures

The Syracuse Library is in the final stages of an interior renovation that is giving the library a new look. In 1980 the library purchased about 30 paintings with the intention of loaning them for display by patrons, which is what happened for about ten years. Beginning in the mid-1990’s the practice was discontinued. The pictures are now being offered for sale as a benefit for the Friends of the Library.

The pictures, along with contemporary pieces of local artists, will be offered through a silent auction. The display and bidding begins Tuesday, May 26, and ends during a music filled evening on Friday, June 19. Bidder’s identification numbers will be assigned during registration and the high bid is not required to attend the final evening.

Follow the River

The adult book club, One Book, One Hour, is reading a work of fiction about a place that is part of our national parks heritage. Author James Alexander Thom recreates the escape of Mary Draper Ingles from her Indian captors during the time of the French and Indian War. “Follow the River” is the story of the 500 mile journey that follows the New River Gorge National River in West Virginia. The Park Service has information about this interesting place at, http://www.nps.gov/neri/learn/historyculture/mary-draper-ingles.htm

Thom is a popular Indiana author because of his meticulous attention to detail when he tells historic stories and because he includes the Indian’s perspective. The book club is discussing “Follow the River” 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10.The group welcomes new members. Call the Syracuse Library for a copy at (574) 457-3022.
