New Hours
The Syracuse Library has a change of hours so that the library will always open at 10 a.m. The new Thursday hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday hours are now 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shift in schedule should be less confusing for patrons and help when scheduling employees.
A Historical View of Art in Syracuse
Patrick Appenzeller, vice-president of the historical museum and a close relative of some local entrepreneurs and painters is speaking at the Syracuse Library at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 18. Ken Harkless is an uncle and a man who devoted his retirement years to recording Syracuse historic places and events. His niece Betty Appenzeller was a prolific painter of local scenes and still life paintings that she sold.
Appenzeller is bringing the paintings of Sheldon Harkless, Ken Harkless, his mother Betty Appenzeller, and a rare picture by Luella Sprague. Hallie Pace Prow’s grand-daughter, Nancy Clark Strong, is sharing the biography of her grandmother who was a member of the Hoosier Salon. An overview of the historic paintings in the library’s collection will be presented at the free event in the meeting room of the Syracuse Library.
The Library is Silent
Fans of the “Doctor Who” series are viewing an episode in season four where a library is a pretty creepy place. The group meets from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20 to share season four trivia, eat an Adipose person replica, and be silent in the library. Marshmallow products and fun are guaranteed.
Young Adults Repeat the Evening
Young people are invited to the Syracuse Library for a repeat of the last book club at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, for a rematch challenge of Apples to Apples. Teens in sixth grade to high school are invited to eat taco nachos and talk about books, movies and fan-fiction.
Drawing is Held Saturday
Master the Art of Reading is an adult reading program that ends Saturday, May 23, with the final drawing. The top winners will receive $100, $75, $50 of credit for bidding in the silent auction. The Friends silent auction is selling the art collection that was purchased for lending at the Syracuse Library during the 1980s.
