Bryce Zimpelman doesn’t have a whole lot to say on or off the golf course.
The smooth southpaw would prefer to let his game do the talking for him.
Zimpelman, a Tippecanoe Valley senior, does hope though to make plenty of noise come the postseason again this year.
Zimpelman earned a spot in the regional a year ago and his hoping to at least repeat that effort this spring.
“I definitely want to get back to the regional,” said Zimpelman following his team’s recent match versus Wawasee at the South Shore Golf Club. “I think that if I do that and get hot that I can shoot a good score at Stonehenge and see what happens.”
Zimpelman shot a round of 76 at the Warsaw Sectional at the Rozella Ford Golf Club in 2014. He then shot an 80 in the regional at the Stonehenge Golf Club in Winona Lake.
“Things are going okay this year, but obviously I would like it to be going a little better,” remarked Zimpelman after shooting a 40 on the back nine at South Shore. “Off the tee and on the greens have given me some trouble at times. I just need to straighten out my drives off the tee and get a better putting stroke and do a better job reading the greens.”
Zimpelman has had his moments this spring. He shot a round of 76 to place third at the Michigan City Invitational and had an 81 to place fifth in the Rochester Invitational. He had a 76 last Saturday to take top honors as the Vikings won the LaVille Invitational at the Sprig-O-Mint course.
“Bryce is a pretty quiet kid,” said longtime Valley coach Roger Moriarty. “He’s just an easy kid to deal with. He’s a good team leader and the anchor of our team.”
“He’s playing okay this season. He’s averaging right at 40 and I know that both of us would like that to be a couple shots lower. He’s expecting more and so am I. He just needs to manage the course and be a little more accurate.”
Zimpelman will lead his team into the Three Rivers Conference Meet on Saturday at Rozella Ford.
“My goal is to be medalist at the TRC,” said Zimpelman.
Moriarty believes that his ace can meet the challenge come the sectional on June 5 at Rozella Ford.
“Rozella is his home course and he feels comfortable there,” said Moriarty. “Our sectional is one of the tougher ones around, but I feel good about what Bryce can do.
“He’s consistent and I see him as a 76 player. He’s capable of getting back to the regional and maybe to State. If he puts it all together, there’s no reason he couldn’t. It’s just all a matter of performing at the right time.”
